Merry Christmas Maria - a Sonic Fan Fiction with Shadow

A Sonic The Hedgehog Holiday Story

Co-Written By Gwen Wagmu And Erin LaVaux Quarles

Snow was gently falling, frost coating the windows as Shadow the Hedgehog stood in the kitchen of his house, listening to Trans-Siberian Orchestra on his playlist of Christmas music as he prepared to make Christmas cookies. It was calm, nice. He lived fairly far away from most people, so he had no annoying neighbors trying to invite him places-The doorbell suddenly rang and his mood soured.

"NO! No!" He shouted at the door from the kitchen. "Not today! Go away! No people! Bah humbug!" He huffed.

"Merry Christmas, Shadow! It's us!" A collection of muffled but familiar voices echoed from outside as Cream the Rabbit and her Chao buddy waved from outside one of the windows.

"Merry nothing! Get lost!" Shadow glared at the door, walking away from it.

"But, Shadow, it's Christmas!" Another voice called from outside.

He sighed, walking back over to the door. "Ugh, fine." Shadow unlocked the door and pulled it open, unenthused as he stood off to the side as everyone rushed into the house.

"MERRY CHRISTMAS, SHADOW!" They cheered. Everyone was dressed up-including Big the Cat in a Santa Claus costume-and holding platters of food, wrapped gifts, and one large box of Christmas decorations.

Shadow sighed, giving in to the group of uninvited guests. "Fine, since you're all here, someone help me in the kitchen-Not you, Sonic."

The blue hedgehog held up his hands in surrender and backed away. "Sure thing. It's your house, man."

"Cream and I will help you!" Tails offered, smiling as he readjusted the Santa hat on his head while Cream nodded as Cheese the Chao flew around the living room.

"Sure."

As the group mingled around Shadow's dining room table, platters of food and treats set out for the event, Cream, Shadow, and Tails worked on making Christmas cookies. Shadow, stirring the batter, absent-mindedly began to softly sing to the Christmas music, drawing everyone's attention to him as they stared at him with their mouths hanging open.

Tails looked at him in surprise. "Wow, Shadow. It's almost like you're in a good mood."

"Well, it is Christmas. I'm not a monster." He huffed.

Sonic smirked at Shadow from the other side of the room. "So, that's why you didn't want us to come over. You didn't want people to see you enjoying Christmas."

"Hmph." Shadow glared at him before going back to stirring.

"Okay, what's next in the recipe?" Cream asked, holding one of the bowls.

"Hmm..." Shadow looked at the recipe page, picking it up. "Walnuts."

A loud boom echoed through the house as the table shook and everyone screamed. "AAAH!" The entire group turned to see Knuckles pounding walnuts open with his fists.

"What? You said you needed walnuts."

"I have a nutcracker." Shadow pointed to the utensil on the counter that Tails had just been reaching for.

"Eh, this is more efficient." Knuckles shrugged, about to return to his action.

"Oh, is that so, Knuckles?" Shadow snapped. "Giving everyone a heart attack is more efficient?!" Shadow's face started to form a snarl and Sonic laughed nervously.

"Okay! Now, it's a party, everyone's having fun!" Sonic waved his hands a little. "Let's all relax and enjoy each other's company. Knuckles, maybe pounding the walnuts open with your fists isn't exactly the best idea. It's kind of loud, buddy..."

"Hmph, fine." Knuckles picked up the already-opened walnuts and handed them to Shadow. "Sorry about the noise."

"It's fine, I suppose..."

After a while, Shadow tasted the batter and let out a strange squeal, causing everyone to stare at him. Sonic's eye even twitched a little. Shadow blinked, noticing them staring at him. "It's really good."

"Well, let's put them in the oven!" Amy cheered.

"Yay!" Cream smiled as they all put the dough onto the trays and slid the trays into the oven. Shadow clicked the settings and the group then started to work on the frosting for decorating the cookies.

"Hey, Shadow, I noticed you didn't have any Christmas decorations up, so I brought some stuff from home." Tails held up a big box of Christmas dΓ©cor. "If you don't mind, Cream, Big, and I can start putting stuff on your Christmas tree."

"What Christmas tree?" Shadow looked at him in confusion, just as the front door swung open and Vector came marching into the house toting a big, green Christmas tree along with Espio and Charmy.

"HEY-O! Merry Christmas, everyone!" The crocodile exclaimed merrily. "Sorry we're late!"

"Vector! Hey!" Knuckles came over to him and the two lugged the huge tree into Shadow's living room as everyone greeted the members of Team Chaotix. "I was thinking of turning on the football game when it starts later, wanna join me?"

"Oh, you bet!" Vector grinned at Knuckles as they began talking while setting up the Christmas tree in the corner of the room.

Shadow frowned, letting out a deep sigh. "Great... More people..." He sighed, staying in the kitchen as he watched the group. Cream, and Charmy placed ornaments on the tree, laughing as they talked. Tails was stringing lights and garlands around the tree and the room with Espio's help. Knuckles, Vector, and Big were all laughing and joking with each other while they had cups of hot cocoa. Silver and Blaze were talking near the fireplace, as Rouge walked over to Shadow.

"Well, seems like you're enjoying the party, huh?" She smirked, pulling a speck of dust off her pink and red Christmas sweater.

"Hmph, hardly. You all showed up at my house uninvited."

"You can't fool me. Merry Christmas, Shadow." She elbowed him playfully. "Now, if you don't mind, I'm gonna go mess with Sonic and hold some mistletoe above him and Amy." She chuckled, flying off to the other room.

"Heh..."

As grand orchestral music started playing, Silver got excited. "Ooh, I think I've heard this one! Blaze, will you sing it with me?"

"I suppose." She agreed.

"Joy to the world, the Lord is come; Let earth receive her King! Let ev'ry heart prepare him room, and Saints and angels sing, and Saints and angels sing, and Saints, and Saints, and angels sing!" The duo belted out along to the melody, causing everyone to join in with them.

"Ooh! I wanna sing a song, too!" Cream chirped as Cheese sat on her head.

"No, Rouge, stop!" Sonic sprinted the other way as Rogue chased after him in the air with a sprig of mistletoe. "Nooooo!"

"Come on! You both walked under the mistletoe, it's tradition! You have to kiss Amy!"

"That was a trick, Rouge! Even if it's Christmas Eve, I will pull out my hammer!" An embarrassed Amy chased after Rouge, who was chasing after an equally embarrassed Sonic, as the bat all but cackled during the craziness.

Shadow shook his head at the comedic scene, almost not noticing the timer as it went off. "The cookies are finished. Amy, Cream, Charmy, would you like to help frost them?"

"Oh, yes!" The three of them joined Shadow in the kitchen once again, pulling the cookies out of the oven and as the cookies began to cool, the group prepared the frosting and decorations. As they were putting the frosting on the cookies, Knuckles walked past for another cup of hot cocoa and grabbed a fistful of cookies, taking a bite out of them.

"Mm! These are good!" He said, muffled because of the cookies.

"They taste better when they're frosted." Amy said flatly.

"I'm good. Let's get this game started! Who's in?! Vector?" Knuckles made his way back to the living room as a new song started playing. One that Shadow had forgotten was on his playlist.

1, 2, 3, 4

I'm gettin' nuttin' for Christmas

'Cause I ain't been nothing but bad

I broke my bat on Johnny's head

Somebody snitched on me

I hid a frog sister's bed

Somebody snitched on me-

"Ugh." Rouge pushed a button, forwarding past the music, getting a thank-you from several people.

"HEY! I like that song!" Knuckles huffed, finally stopping his headbanging dance.

"Yeah, I could tell."

"So, what was that for?!"

"I don't like it." Rouge folded her arms.

"Wha-Oh, and you're allowed to skip past it? I thought Shadow said only he was allowed to mess with the music!"

"Eh, I'm not a big fan of that one either. Thank you, Rouge."

"Seriously?!"

"Okay, stop fighting. Remember, it's Christmas, isn't it?" Silver tried to mediate between Rouge and Knuckles. They both shrugged, giving up.

"It's getting cold. Should we start the fireplace?" Espio asked, holding a bunch of logs he was bringing in from outside, so his stance on the topic was clear.

"Why not?"

Espio nodded and put the logs in the fireplace, adding a yule log to the pile and Blaze flicked a fireball at it, causing it to erupt in warm, orangey-yellow flames.

Shadow sighed. "I'm gonna go outside for a moment, if you all don't mind..." He grabbed a cup of hot cocoa on his way and walked out into the snow, stopping several feet away from the house.

The sun was already beginning to set, Shadow let out a deep sigh as the winter chill bit through him. Out of every possible way he'd thought his Christmas Eve would go, he hadn't expected this. He looked back through the windows and saw the lights and garlands Tails had strung strategically around the house, illuminating the merriment inside. All of his friends were in his house, talking and laughing as the interior of his house and brand-new Christmas tree had been decorated and shone so peacefully.

He looked back at the sun dipping down below the horizon in the wintery sky and raised his hot chocolate with a small smile.

"Merry Christmas, Maria."
